Hello,

I am trying to spec stepper motor for a school project. We know we need a motor with a stall torque of 16 kg-cm. The speeds we will be using will be fairly low. We are hoping to get a stepper motor with a high resolution encoder or a microstepping stepper motor. We also need motor drivers to pair with this motor which is coupled with a NI myRIO. I don't have much experience in this field and I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Another option could be a DC motor with encoder. Any adivce or tips on what I need to be looking for when searching for motors would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you kindly,

I can provide some pointers to start you out. Regarding motor options with the myRIO, you have several options:

1) You can find an ISM (Integrated Stepper Motor) that has the holding torque you need. This includes both the motor and the drive in one device. The different ISMs NI offers, along with their specs, are in the document below. 16 kg-cm equates to around 222 oz-in, which is higher than the ISMs can handle, so you might not be able to find a motor with a high enough holding torque for your application.

2) You can find a stepper motor with the holding torque you need and then find a corresponding SMD (stepper motor drive). The following resource lists a bunch of motors as well as what drives (SMD-76XX) are compatible with each motor, encoder options, and holding torque specs, starting on page 7. More detailed specs on each motor are on previous pages.

3) Another option is to use the Digilent myRIO motor adapter with the myRIO and to get a third party motor that interfaces with that adapter. You might want to investigate what motors are available; important specs to look out for are the holding torque of the motor as well as the voltage range and power. I'll include the specs of the motor adapter below; there are several resources included on that page.

Keep in mind that with any of these options, you will not be able to use NI motion control software (NI-Motion or SoftMotion) with the myRIO, as you would be able to with a CompactRIO; you will need to send the commands manually through PWM.

Good luck.
