CVI & Driver Versions

A distribution lit was developed using CVI 5.0, NI GPIB August 1999, NI-DAQ 6.5.1 (Just for Static Port and Single line I/O using PCI DIO-96) and NI SERIAL 1.45. This was installed on a test PC along with the above drivers to test one of our products. We are now using CVI 7.0 and the product has now been updated. Can we develop the new distribution kit using CVI 7.0 and install and run it on the same test PC while still being able to run the original installed application as this is still required to be used?

Will we have to update the installed drivers for the CVI 7.0 version and/or re-build the original CVI 5.0 application within CVI 7.0 for the latest run-time engine?

Hello,

You can do everything that you ask. This is mostly possible because we changed installation technology between your versions of CVI. You can also do this in CVI 7.0 distribution kit now as well, so you can have 2 CVI 7.0 apps running side by side.

Your application will run side by side but you will only have one Runtime Engine on the machine, but it maintains backwards compatibility so you should not have a problem.

You should not have to update the drivers, unless you are using new technology from the drivers, since they also maintain backwards compatibility.

The new distribution kit will update the runtime engine so you should not have to recompile the 5.0 version of you application. You should just work on the 7.0 version of your application
and make sure you can get everything working for it.

Hope this helps,

Stuart,

You should not have to update the drivers when you upgrade to CVI 7.0. As Jeff pointed out, the CVI 7.0 Run-time engine is backwards compatible and will work with previous versions of CVI and NI drivers. You should be able to create a distribution kit with CVI 7.0 and install it on the same test PC where your CVI 5.0 application used to run.

Best of luck,
