I've had reasonably good luck with gaussian fitting and initial guesses by using the array max and it's location as the peak location and amplitude guesses, the array min as the offset guess(I'm fitting a 4th order gaussuan function with offset). I guess at a spread by locating the threasholded points on either side of the peak that have a value of peak-offset and subtracting the low from high positions.
