machine learning starter

I am new to machine learning and would like some help getting started with the toolkit.

We have a very large set of training data - the 3D trajectories of a number of markers in space, from which we currently identify in which frame two specific events occur (discrete single frame events), by eye. I would like to train an algorithm to learn to detect these events without operator involvement.

It sounds sImple, but I haven't got a clue where to start! Any pointers?
