how to find a string different of "off"

Haven't looked at the snippet, but I agree that there should be some visual indicator. Ditching the option is probably not possible, because of compatibility issues with existing code.

Maybe the selector text could be a different color (e.g. grey instead of black) if it is set to case insensitive, or there could be a glyph.
