I've had a look at the behaviour you described and I also concluded that this is not expected and thus I have filed a CAR report for this issue. R&D will now evaluate the problem and determine what further action should be taken; thanks for bringing the issue to our attention.

As an addition to my previous statements, it seems to work backwards. If the inner structure has Autogrow but the outer does not, resizing the inner out of bounds (as i did in my previously posted picture) it actually grows the outer structure! If seems the logic is reversed.
