What is this symbol, and where do I find it on the pallette?

That is a local variable to a front panel control.  The easiest way is to right-click on the control you want to create a local variable for and go to Create->Local Variable.

Thank you very much. I had figured out that it was a local variable, but I had to right click and select "Change to read" from the menu.
