Web Service deployment failed

I have a web service applicataion that has been running fine now for some time. Recently, I edited one of the "always include" files [not the web method or aux vi's] and built and redeployed. I got the following error message:

webserviceerror.jpg

"You must start the NI Application Web Server before deploying a web service." Well the Application Web Server IS started, in fact the old deployment is running just fine. But for good measure I re-enabled the web service via localhost:3580, restarted the service via services.msc, repaired the installation and [of course] rebooted. I'm all out of quick fixes. Clearly the error message is mistaken but it prevents my deployment from completing. Ideas? [this knowledgebase article is irrelevant]

Hi pltrogon,

I'm not sure which version of Labview you are using, but currently there is an issue that occurs when repairing some of the 2011 NI Software which leaves the Web Server unregisted.  The issue is discussed here: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/2AF18FBF04D29104862578D8004E4A6B?OpenDocument.  The current fix is to simply repair the installation a second time.

Yes, I'm using 2011. I have repaired the installation now a total of 3 times to no avail. Also, this doesn't seem to be the correct issue since my web service is running fine and my old build is deployed without a problem.

The Application Web Service is running fine--but LV seems to think that it is not enabled.

You say the old Web Service is still deployed and running fine?  Is it visible in the NI Distributed System Manager?

No, it is not visible in the DSM... I seem to recall some bug several months ago where monitoring web services from the DSM caused an errror and I had to remove an entry in an *.ini file to fix it. Fuzzy on the details. Should it be there?

I am unable to find any reference to the DSM problem I alluded to. Either I am making it up or conflating it with something else.

Slightly relatedly, in LV 2010 I could remove unwanted old deployments by deleting the .lvws files from here [in XP]:

C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\My Documents\LabVIEW Data\WebServices\Standalone

But since running 2011, this folder is empty. Where are the old .lvws files now? Deleting the folders in

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\National Instruments\WebServices\aws

doesn't help because they get regenerated from some invisible source [formerly the Standalone directory]. This document should hold this information but doesn't: http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361H-01/lvconcepts/file_locations_ws/

Ah, here it is:

http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/05AD2189D1E0D8A28625776800711DE0

I followed the instructions and now I can see the deployed services in the DSM [and, extra bonus, I can delete the old ones].

I still can't deploy though.

Hey pltrogon,

So you are now able to see the services running but you are unable to deploy any new web services?  Or is the problem just limited to this single service being deployed?  If it is for all of your applications, I hate to suggest a complete uninstall and reinstall because it does require a significant amount of time, but given that you have tried all troubleshooting steps up to that point it suggests that a reference may be broken somewhere that is beyond simply repairing the installation.

Exactly; I can see the services running but am unable to deploy new web services. It's not just the one web service, it's any web services, even empty ones. I did do an uninstall of 2011 and f2, and a reinstall but it didn't change anything. I didn't uninstall/reinstall the other modules [DSC, etc] because I really doubt the problem is there.

Hey pl,

This seems like a baffling issue, as the DM is definitely able to see the Web Server properly.  Possibly it could be an issue with the Application Builder?  Have you tried deploying with other versions of Labview or just 2011?  Also maybe check the 2 configuration files found in the National Instruments/Shared/NI Web Server folder.  I've attached what I have in mine, which should be the default initial values.
