Using Refresh Local Modules VI

I'm reading about the "Refresh Local Modules VI" in Function Palette >> Measurement I/O >> Scan Engine.

How do I use this? It appears that new I/O module variables are created but how do i access these new channel? Specifically can I access newly added modules programatically in this sense?

Even though my specific need is module discovery using PXI-8106 connected to Ethercat 9144...I guess I'll start with this CRIO example:

That example works for RIO and Lv 2009 or earlier only. if you need to access ethercat and 9144 chassis as well then you need LV 2010 and the NI Ind Com for EtherCAT 2.0 driver.
