What version number of NI-MAX are you using?
Are you running MAX with administrative rights? I've had some strange errors from NI-MAX in the past when I didn't have the right permissions to do something that I tried to do.

LabVIEW 2011 is supported all the way through NI-MAX 14.x, though official support drops with all of the 15.x versions. Can you update MAX and see if that helps?
