Smooth a waveform,extract some points from waveform to simplify display

I have a amplitude spectrum(FFT) waveform,you know it consists of thousands of points.Now I want to do some analysis on it.

1.How to smooth a waveform in Labview?Is there a way to choose 1/3 octave or something to smooth a waveform?

2.How to simplify a waveform by extracting some points from it?The waveform has up to 5000 points,but I don't need so many.I just want to get a smaller waveform from it which only consists of 50 or 100 points ,but has the same shape without missing too much detailes.Like the red curve in the picture below.
