NI MAX crashes at load plugins following NI MAX update to 14.x

Hi,

I have issue with NI Max since I've updated it from 5.6 (I think it was) to 14.0.1...

1. I uninstall the entire labview and all of its components, then reinstalled it. MAX was working on 5.6, but when I updated it to 14.0 via the NI Update Service, it has stopped working... For sure I could uninstall everything again, but not sure why 14.0.1 does not work on my pc...

2. I tried to edit the users permission as suggested in the following post,

http://forums.ni.com/t5/Multifunction-DAQ/NI-MAX-stuck-at-load-plugins/td-p/1102284/page/2

3. Tried to remove the MAX database by deleting the MAX files in c:\programdata as suggested in this post:

http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/2C7480E856987FFF862573AE005AB0D9?OpenDocument

4. tried to update some components like VISA, DAQmx, 488.2, but it changed nothing.

but MAX is still not working...

I think that MAX was firstly crashing at plugin loading stage, but after my tests, it now crashes just before loading the complete GUI (i.e. the splash screen dispear then MAX crashes).

Here is the list of the NI components currently installed (following all my tests):

 - NI MAX 14.0.1

 - Labview 2013 SP1 F5

 - Teststand 2014

 - NI-VISA 14.0.0

 - NI-DAQ 14.2.0

 - NI-488.2 14.0

Thank you for help,

C.

I had a problem with MAX before, see http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/NI-MAX-Woes/m-p/2993331/highlight/true#M857947 Obviously, since it is crashing on start-up you cannot generate a report, a good suggestion if you read the link. My suggestion would be to uninstall one component at a time and see if you can start it. For example, remove DAQmx, then NI-SYnc, etc. For me the problem was DAQmx. This is a painstaking process; I wish a had a better suggestion. Good Luck Cheers, mcduff

If you can provide the identity of the NIER report or the crash dump itself, I may be able to identify the cause of the crash, or at least what component is causing the problems.

Crash dumps should be located here: C:\ProgramData\National Instruments\MAX\Logs\MAX

Hi Alisha,

This folder (C:\ProgramData\National Instruments\MAX\Logs\MAX) is empty in my computer...

Interesting... Any ideas?

Thanks

C.

Is there anything in any of the other directories within C:\ProgramData\National Instruments\MAX\Logs\

You stated that MAX is crashing at load. Does it actually crash? Or does it hang and you have to end the process?

If it's hanging you can force a crash, although you would need to run 32-bit task manager: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/amb/archive/2011/05/12/do-not-collect-32bit-process-dumps-with-64bit-task-ma...

A crash dump created this way might or might not have useful information.

If it's truly crashing there should be a crash dump somewhere.

Hi Alisha,

Ok, to clarify, it hangs. Like MAX starts and after a few seconds, a Windows pop-up appears and checking for a solution to the problem. Afterward, the pop-up says: "Measurement & Automation Explorer has stopped working..." [Debug] | [Close program].

In C:\ProgramData\National Instruments\MAX\Logs\, there are 3 folders:

 - MAX: empty

 - MXS: with 2 old .dmp files. Both have been generated on 2015-03-02 and are not refreshed when I open MAX

 - Other: empty

Please, download the dump files via this link... https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2686118/Dump.zip

The dump file generated from the task manager has 400mo, so I can't upload it to the forum...

Dump.zip:

 - dump file created from the task manager as described in the link you provided me : NIMax.DMP
 - one of the log file in MXS folder: "f7514050-d348-4a21-a8c3-bb3610eaadce.dmp"

Thank you

HI Alisha,

Any new ideas? Were you able to identify the root cause of my problem from the crashing report provided in my last post?

My current version is 14.5...

Thank you

When it crashes do you see a dialog with any additional information?  If you can attach a screen shot of what is shown with everything expanded that could really help narrow down the problem.

Without much to go on I can only suggest trying to install MAX 15.0 that is included with the NI System Configuration 15.0 distribution.  I know that it has fixed a few 14.x crashes for a few other customers.

Hi Joshua,

I updated my System Configuration to 15.0.0 and I still get the error from Windows saying "Measurement & Automation Explorer has stopped working" during the "loading plugin" phase. See MAX_crash.png in attachment.

Then I hit the "Debug" button and got the "An unhandled exception of type 'System.StackOverflowException' occurred in mscorlib.dll" while Visual Studio 2010 is opening. Not sure if this error is related to Visual studio. Anyway, I clicked "Continue", and "Debug > Start new instance" on the NIMAX icon (in visual studio). Not sure if it could help, but I put the Visual Studio output log in attachment (Output-Debug.txt)... Seems there is a stack overflow and some memory corruption... Not very sure of what is going on and how it could help...

thank you
