I do not think that there is any set rule to this.  The cards that use other available channels when you select differential measurements instead of having their own dedicated Ai- terminal will be all set up in groups of 8 I believe.

Is it M series or newer?

The paradigm shifted between series' of MFD devices when NI appropriatly realized the a 32 channel device might directly subtitute for a 16 channel device without code change! (simply rename the Alias and you are off and running on the modular instrument- It even should have the same connector!)
