How do I read a value back from a merged cell in Excel?

I have an application that puts data into a excel spreadsheet, some of which I want to read back.  Reading data from regular cells is fine with the invoke node 'value' function but I can't make it work from merged cells.  I would be very grateful for any help.

Even when a cell is merged you still get the value the same way. It becomes one cell and you put that cell in the range and then read the data from it. see example provided.

Thanks Joe, after further investigation my problem was was not reading the values but the results of an earlier mistake propagating through.
