This is actually bad advice.  You should have the RTE that exactly matches the development version of LabVIEW.  Newer RTEs are useless to you.

Wow, lesson learned. Do you guys know the reason for this? To save space maybe? I would think backwards compatibility would be nice to have.

The runtime engine does not include the compiler so you can't load an older version. It's always been this easy.
