Yes it was possible in LV 7.1 and was easier if you had the DB toolkit. Otherwise you could roll-your-own SQL statements to access the DB starting with (if my memory only would go back that far) Automation Refnum set for "ADODB...." and from there start creating property and invoke nodes...
I know Mike Porter did this while in my case I was only exploring.
But is was much easier using the tool kit.
