All I was saying is that your version and Jim's version were functionally equivalent.  My bigger point is that if you understand when you need to escape the '.' character then you can pick and choose.  If you want a one-size-fits-all approach than you can use '\.' anytime you want a '.' character.

 

  [^0-9:,][.]

 

That regex is going to match a character which is not a digit, colon or comma followed by a '.' character.  Not what you where looking for.
