Sounds more like a permission issue. Do you mean you can't see any of the files on the 8196?

No, I mean, locally, the video is dropped after starting xp splash screen, but we can remote desktop to it. We have tried different monitors to no avail. We don't have the option to change the resolution from the remote desktop session. The local monitor reacts like it is not getting any signal.
thanks

Any chance you might have turned on the machine without having the monitor plugged in? The video chips are based on a laptop with an internal display output and an external display output. If you don't have the external display, it defaults back to its internal output, which doesn't have a display attached because its not truly a laptop.
See this KB for information on how to fix either temporarily or permanently. No Video Output on PXI-819x or PXI(e)-810x Controller in Windows
It's good that you can remote desktop to it so that you can log into it. It is a real trick trying to log into windows blind.
