I don't know if there's already a trick like this or any workarround but most of the time I use the color selection tool, I want the same color for both FB and BG, quite often for transparent color.
If you press Spacebar while the palette is visible, it switches between changing FG only, BG only, and FG+BG - at least most of the time it does depending on which colors are able to be set independently.
