Pass data from pre- to post-build VI

Any idea that has received less than 2 kudos within 2 years after posting will be automatically declined. 

It would be nice to have some means of passing arbitrary data from a pre-build VI to the corresponding post-build VI. This could be achieved with variant input/output terminals on these VIs and passing the data through during the build process. The workaround that I use now is to write a temporary file.
