I never used it. We have ModBus devices with custom ModBus functions. So I always end up wiring my own programs for testing.
When I find the time I will look at the IO server.
Edit: I don't have DCS module or RT on my machine

there was a lot of things going on with modbus, and the worst thing is not everybody follows the exact same protocol that's what the RS in the RS 485 stands for recommended standard.
It's not always fun to play with a slightly askew protocol. But if they follow the recommended standard, it does give clues as to what is going on.

I agree, if you use ModBus you must follow the standard for the general commands. Beside that you can implement custom commands for your own communication.
btw.
RS-485 is a hardware layer. you can put any form of serial data over it with any protocol you wish to use. One of them happens to be ModBus.
ModBus is a communication protocol that can be use at any hardware layer. eg. RS-485, RS-232, water-pipe, etc
RS-485 is not ModBus and ModBus is not RS-485 !!
