Unable to Read/write from/to Rs -232 port

I am not able to Read/write to RS 232 serial port of an instrument using LabVIEW seial VI's. However, it can be easly done using NI's VISA interactive control (plug & play). What could be the possible problem?

Some new Serial examples for LabVIEW have been posted on Developer Zone in the last couple of weeks. They all start with "Serial Communication"; there is a library of VIs for 6.1 and individual VIs for 7.0. I would suggest trying those, maybe starting with the Basic Write and Read.
