I can't look at your VI since I am posting by phone. One thing to be aware of is to set your control/constant to display backslash codes if you are appending \r or \n.
The way I read the manual, you get two messages when you request a value. The first is the acknowledgement and the second is the reading. When doing a setting, you should just get the acknowledgement.
