After you have run scan for instruments and your instrument is found, what does it say next to the Identification property in the middle when you select your instrument in the tree? Also does the Error LED appear when you open the Communicate with instrument dialog, or when you press the query or write buttons?
Have you checked your instruments manual to see what the Error LED means?

I get the ERROR LED glowing as soon as I send QUERRY.
What was the actual query? Is it a command that's supported by the instrument? Check the programming manual for it. When you first open the communication window, the default entry for a query is *IDN?. This instrument doesn't support that.
