Counter I/O vs digital I/O

I am using a USB-6501 device to get a trigger input on a conveyor.  From what I have been reading the counter is more efficient at this task.  Could anyone explain what is different about a counter I/O vs a digital I/O?

Thanks,

Doug

A counter measures period, frequecy, and time delay.  A DIO measures state.  What kind of measurement are you trying to perform?

I am trying to determine the time between triggers (ms) to ensure the analysis is complete before the next image is captured.
