I know this is an old blog, but I'd like to add my insight on this matter.
We have encountered a similar request by another IT administrator in the University of Ostrava in the Czech republic.
We ended up implementing a router module, that would act as a virtualization layer, thus facilitating LM name and port switching among other benefits.
