Trouble working with ground plane...

Solved!
Go to solution

I am using a ground plane with "+" style contact to parts. With spoke width set at .010", contact to parts in many places is too lean, but its just right for others. This fact prevents me from widening the spoke width to solve teh problem.

I have tried adding copper traces manually, but the ground plane resists my efforts by redirecting the traces or refusing to connect them to the plane altogether.

How do I increase ground plane connection to some parts without forcing it on all of them?

Thanks very much, Tod

Hi Tod,

The spoke with can be specified for individual SMT/THT pads. Normally, they are set to inherit the properties from the connected copper area, but you can change this on an individual basis.

To change the spoke width for a particular pad:

  1. Verify that only Edit > Selection Filter > Enable Selecting Pads and Edit > Selection Filter > Enable Selecting SMD Pads are checked (appears depressed)
  2. Select the pad you want to change (you can drag to select more than one at a time
  3. Click Edit > Properties
  4. Select the Thermal Relief tab
  5. Change Spoke Width to your required width
