Current version is 10, upgrading seems like the only logical path from 4

Further to my first post I would be grateful if anyone could provide any advice regarding EWB4 on windows xp.

The problem is this: I have installed EWB4 on windows xp however the program functionality appears to be limited as certain components in the left hand toolbar are absent.

Is this a security lock that prevents one from installing the software on multiple pc's? I have uninstalled the previous installtion of EWB4 from my old pc!

Many thanks

Dude, very few people even have 5 let alone 4 and it wasn't even designed for NT let alone XP which is an NT kernel.  I'm sure my post isn't what you want to hear, but I give you a 1:10000000 chance that someone can even identify that dinosaur let alone even help you with it.  You may have to give up the ghost, its a lost cause.

Thanks but maybe someone on this forum has quite possibly had a similar experience that I may be able to benefit from. I do think this is some kind of unlocking issue rather than program incompatibility.

Hi David,

I can see your not having much luck here. Let me provide you with a couple of options that may solve your issue.

Primarily older versions of this software require a release code to transfer them onto new machines. Details of how to do this are provided in the following link.

 http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/B78BEF8BFD79C97B8625729D0068E1DE

The above article does stipulate that the online release code generator is for versions 6 – 9. However I recommend that you try it anyway. As also detailed in the article if the online release code generator doesn’t work you should consider emailing the team at NI direct through releasecodes@ni.com.

My only other recommendation is for you to get hold of a ME emulator and run EWB Version 4 on XP through that.Hope this information helps.

Regards,

Hi David and Daniel,

Electronics Workbench/Mutltisim changed a lot between version 5 and 6, including the licensing, and I don't believe this is the problem.

Unfortunately, Windows ME is significantly different from Windows XP in many ways, so it is not surprising that you have been unable to get Electronics Workbench 4 to work on Windows XP (version 4 predates XP by several years).

The best chance is to change the compatibility mode for the executible file.

1. Locate the directory where the program is installed, find the main exe file

2. Right click the file and select properties

3. Select the Compatibility tab

4. Check "Run this program in combatibility mode for" and then change the selection to "Windows 98 / Windows ME"

5. Click OK

6. Now try running the program.

If you're lucky, it will work. If not, I don't think there is anything else to try other than finding a copy of Windows 98 or ME (or running on Wine on Linux).

Thanks for the replies, I will go down the release code route and post the outcome on this thread.

Incidentally I did try VMware Workstation emulator in WinME mode, the result is no different to Windows XP.

I also have this software and I am in need of the manual.  Is it available?

It's an old post but for reference:

EWB4 is a 16 bit program not 100% compatible with Windows XP (also not compatible
with compatibility options of Windows XP).
The steps to run EWB4 are:
- Install DOSBOX (www.dosbox.com) in C:\Tools\DOSBOX or the folder you want.
- Inside DOSBOX folder make WIN31 folder.
- Copy WINDOWS folder from a Windows 3.1 installed system to WIN31 folder
- Copy EWB4 folder to WIN31 folder
- At this point you have the following structure:
  C:\Tools\DOSBOX (for e
  C:\Tools\DOSBOX\WIN31
  C:\Tools\DOSBOX\WIN31\WINDOWS
  C:\Tools\DOSBOX\WIN31\EWB4
- Make a text file named WIN31.CONF with the following content
  (read DOSBOX documentation for custom configuration; this is my configuration
  with no sound):

[sdl]
fullscreen=true
fulldouble=true
fullresolution=original
windowresolution=original
output=overlay
autolock=true
sensitivity=100
waitonerror=true
priority=higher,normal
mapperfile=mapper.txt
usescancodes=true

[dosbox]
language=
machine=vga
captures=capture
memsize=32

[render]
frameskip=0
aspect=false
scaler=none
#advinterp2x
#normal2x

[cpu]
core=auto
cycles=auto
cycleup=500
cycledown=20

[mixer]
nosound=true

[midi]
mpu401=none
device=none

[sblaster]
sbtype=none
oplmode=auto

[gus]
gus=false

[speaker]
pcspeaker=true
pcrate=11025
tandy=off
tandyrate=11025
disney=false

[joystick]
joysticktype=none
timed=true
autofire=false
swap34=false
buttonwrap=true

[serial]
serial1=dummy
serial2=dummy
serial3=disabled
serial4=disabled

[dos]
xms=true
ems=true
umb=true

[ipx]
ipx=false

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
@echo off
mount c C:\Tools\DosBox\win31\
set PATH=C:\Windows;C:\Windows\System;C:\Dos;C:\TEMP;z:\
MD C:\Temp
SET TMP=C:\Temp
SET TEMP=C:\Temp
c:
cd \Windows
win.com

  and put in C:\Tools\DOSBOX

- Make a text file named WIN31.CMD with the following content:

start dosbox -conf win31.conf

  and put in C:\Tools\DOSBOX

- Run WIN31.CMD
- Inside Emulator you can press CTRL+F11 to slow down emulation speed and
  CTRL+F12 to speed up emulation speed

If you don't have a Windows 3.1 installed system, make C:\Tools\DOSBOX\WIN31\Setup
and copy there all setup files from Windows 3.1 installation disquettes or CD.
Run WIN31.CMD and go to SETUP folder and run SETUP.EXE to install Windows 3.1
In http://link.imgshare.us/anjDz3 you can see EWB4 running in Windows Vista.

Other options:
- Use MS Virtual PC to install a Win9x/e system
- Load EWB under WINE in Linux

Best regards,
Javier
