Difference between channel & mode dependant channel

Hello
What is the difference between Channel & Mode dependent channel (except that channel is created under message & Mode dependent channel under multiplexer). How we decided when to use which channel .
What is the multiplexer in CAN & when we use it (its application).
How we calculate (finalize) the arbitration id of the message?

If anybody know then pleaseeply.

Hi RJ,

In some cases the number of available identifiers is too small to transmit all of the data, so an extension to these identifiers is needed.

The mode dependent message is only a normal message but with multiple allocations for channels. That means you can define a multiplexer and thus create multiple modes with different channels.

The ID is still the same only the number of channel changes.

For more information see the NI-CAN Hardware and Software Manual on page 6-23.

Hi DirkW

thanks for the reply. I shall be very thankful if you explain little bit more or provide some tutorials or link.

Hi RJ,

Having the NI-CAN software (version 2.2 or higher) installed, there are two options:
  1. Open the Measurement and Automation Explorer and navigate to Help » Help Topics » NI-CAN » MAX Help. Take a look at the 'Mode-dependent Channels in MAX' chapter and also search that help file for the term 'mode-dependent' to get more information about mode-dependent channels and messages.
  2. Open the 'NI-CAN Hardware and Software Manual' (see Start » Programs » National Instruments » NI-CAN) and navigate to the 'Mode Dependent Channels' section of chapter 6 (Using the Channel API). This also provides a short introduction into mode dependant channels.
