TELEMEDICINE AND ARM CONTROL FOR SURGERY

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:

Our project aims at helping the patients in getting a remedy for their disease as fast as possible and also for performing a surgery by controlling an robotic arm using Labview. This remote platform  uses the concept of telemedicine to monitor the health of the patients and diagnose them by performing a surgery when needed and providing medications to them instantly. This reduces the time it takes to diagnose the problem as the patients need not travel to the hospital. Thus it also provides a cheaper and an efficient medical solution. The main beneficiary of this project are the people who live in places which are far away from a hospitial. It is also used to save lives in critical care and emergency situations.

IMPLEMENTATION:

The setup consists of two laptops one depicting the DOCTOR side and the other the PATIENT side. The patient can be seen fron the doctor side via TCP using webcam. The patient's details like Name,Age etc,.can be collected in real time via the chat box provided. The local surgeon on patient side can monitor patient's health condition using sensors placed in the patient’s body. The signals from the sensors are sent to NI MYDAQ card. The output of the card is fed to the PC.The signals are logged using NI BIOMEDICAL WORKBENCH and ECG Feature Extractor is used to extract the features of the logged signals. They are then analyzed using Heartbeat analyzer which generates a report that can be transmitted to the doctor via TCP file transfer VI.Internet is used to transmit the data to the specialist/doctor who is far away from the patient. It acts as a vehicle to deliver the virtual medical instruments and medical data in real time. The TCP/IP functions are built into LabVIEW,and give us a way of transmitting information across the network reliably. We control a robotic ARM  model using LabView to perform a surgery in critical situations. The robotic ARM model is placed in a stable setup, the ARM has three joints. The joint at the base which is attached to the setup can move 360degree, and the next joint can make an angular movement and the last joint can hold an object. The ARM can be controlled from the doctor side VI through the image obtained from the patient side via a webcam using TCP/IP.The boolean switches present on the front panel will allow the doctor to control the ARM in left, right, upward and downward directions. When the switch is toggled it transmits the signal via TCP which is received by the patient side VI and is then sent to the pins of ARDUINO microcontroller which  triggers the motors of the ARM to move in the corresponding direction. The ARM can thus be used to to perform a surgery by performing cutting operations by tracing the sketched path.

CHALLENGES:

  • The setting up of ARM is quite complex.
  • It requires a local surgeon to monitor the patient’s health

SOFTWARE USED:

  • NI LABVIEW 2011
  • NI BIOMEDICAL WORKBENCH 2012

HARDWARE USED:

  • Laptops
  • NI MYDAQ data acquisition card.
  • Pulse sensors.
  • ARDUINO UNO  microcontroller.
  • Robotic ARM .
  • Motor driver circuitry.

CONCLUSION:

The project thus can be used to monitor health conditions and provide medication in real time for the patients who has limited access to a hospital/a specialized doctor. This reduces the time it takes to diagnose the problem as the patients need not travel to the hospital and also provides a cheaper and an efficient medical solution. It save lives in critical care and emergency situations with the extent of performing a real time surgery.
