How to use PFI's on ELVIS II

Hello Guys,

I have ELVIS II hardware board and trying to understand the features of it. 

I am having troubling making use of PFI's counters and DSUB.

1) How they can be configured as inputs, outputs etc,

    can they be used through instrument launcher, rather than labview.

2) How to use the timer/counter on ELVIS board.

i understand function of Gate, Source, out terminals.

Using instrument launcher i experimented

I gave an enable signal for gate from a digital output through instrument launcher.

I connected function gen output with 5V and 100HZ signal through instrument launcher to source.

and I connected counter output signal to channel 0 and tried observing in SCOPE.
