I am in negotiations with some consultants about some LabVIEW contract roles in Germany (Stuttgart). Just not sure what is a reasonable rate. I have 6years LabVIEW, 4 years TestStand with CLD and CTA certification.

I know its a bit difficult to generalise but ballpark figures would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Folks!

I'm new to our community, and thank you all in advance for any ideas and support!

I'm a computer technician. With a BS in Marketing. I have about 15 years of mixed IT support experience. Most is in troubleshooting software, network connectivity and in deployments. Some experience in small project management, creating and executing test plans, and transitioning customers to a new platform. I also enjoyed my most-favorite position as an electro-mechanical field service tech, for two years.

Two years ago, I was working as a short-term contract software tester. Towards the end of the project, I was introduced to LabVIEW, but didn't have the chance to sink my teeth into learning the app. I lost access to LabVIEW as my contract ended. While experimenting with LabVIEW, I saw the power behind the application.

Presently, I'm considering a career change from IT Support. IT Support is saturated in our area, it's really an employer's market. I'd have to get re-certified to re-qualify for unchallenged Tier 1 Support opportunities. Bandwidth has increased, which allows for remote support, so... not as much need for onsite techs. And there's less hardware troubleshooting in IT these days; most parts are relatively inexpensive and just swapped out. Lastly, I'm bored being on the front line, handling multitudes of end users.

PLC logic controllers seem to be a decent segway to explore. I have little experience in PLC, while I'm intrigued with the combination of programming software with respective hardware (vs.. Just configuring software). I understand NI has a PLC tester module, which is pretty cool.

I thought about revisiting a career as an entry level software and /or hardware tester. I got in touch with the NI sales force, and inquired what resources are available to facilitate my exposure in order to learn LabVIEW. The investment is costly. Any discounts are for matriculated students only.

So I'm posting an invitation to some of you LabVIEW veterans :smileyhappy: to see if anyone has any suggestions or job leads? I'm hoping for an on-the-job-training LabVIEW opportunity. I'm open to relocating. I just feel it would be easier to secure a modest opportunity and gradually work into learning LabVIEW, rather than invest quite a bit and delay my overall progress.

The best day I ever had at work, was when I was a field service tech. I custom fabbed a non-OEM shim to fit into an OEM hopper, using an exacto knife, particle board, and duct tape. I also had to massage the senors and firmware on the machine, then jibe the customer's software driver to make everything work. I was MacGyver, and delivered a nearly seamless, completely pragmatic successful solution in less than three hours! Never knew I had it in me, it was so much fun.

I also thought about purchasing Lego Mindstorms. I understand there's a truncated LabVIEW module / feature which might help initiate familarity with testing concepts and production lifecycles.

1. I'm open to any suggestions for a good certification segway transition, perhaps into software / hardware testing

2. I'm open to coordinate any On-The-Job-Training opportunities

3. Other Ideas to gain access to learn how to use LabVIEW
