UPS systems

Sorry for the previous multiple postings. I am new here...
Does anyone know a UPS system which can be controlled by RS232, GPIB or UPS drivers rather than their own software? For instance, Powerware 9120 has a USB and a serial port, but it seems to be working only with their operating software. I would like to use simple commands through my LabVIEW program. Any clue?

A couple of years ago, I tried to get the protocol from Powerware for my 9120.  They said that it is proprietary and would not disclose it.

I would guess that most manufacturer's would keep their protocol propprietary for some reason I cannot fathom.

There are serial port sniffers that let you capture and display serial data being sent and recieved. But of course I cannot see any application for such programs...

Though I'd revive this thread now that a few years have passed:

MGE (formerly APC) has a few sparse documents descibing their protocols:

From what I can gather the 'u-Talk' protocol is on its way out, to be replaced with the 'SHUT' protocol. I have been trying to decipher 'SHUT' for a few days with mild success. Has anybody been down this path before?
